One dead, dozens injured in Ohio mass shooting

One person was killed and at least 24 injured in a mass shooting in the US state of Ohio.

The shooting occurred in the city of Akron just after midnight local time (05:00 BST).

Officers discovered dozens of bullet casings and a gun at the scene near Kelly Street and 8th Avenue, according to local media reports.

No one has been arrested or identified as a suspect and an investigation is ongoing, the Akron Police Department confirmed.

In a statement to the BBC, the force said at least 25 people were shot, one of whom was killed.

It also confirmed that many of the victims' injuries were non-life-threatening, but added that some had "more serious conditions".

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding later issued a joint statement on social media promising to "bring those responsible to justice."

"Our city is reeling from the devastation of senseless violence," it said.

"With more than two dozen victims, the pain and trauma reverberates throughout Akron today as we search for answers."

It also assured anyone with information about the shooting that they could come forward anonymously.

"We need you to speak up to prevent further violence and retaliation.

"Our city government and our Akron Police Department will continue to prioritize public safety as our number one concern as we aim to end gun violence in our community."
